MediaWatchIt is designed to enable physicians to comment and critique articles in lay press/media about healthcare and have frank and fearless discussions about the contents of these articles. |
Healthcare and physicians are the subject of numerous news stories in lay media. Most of these are written by non-physicians with superficial understanding of healthcare and who have the personal incentive to sensationalize the issue. Frequently, the physicians are demonized for their 'greed' without an appreciation of what are the drivers of a particular physician behavior. Often, the facts are distorted completely or used out of context. Physicians are often too busy to respond to these stories in lay press. More importantly, physicians are loathe to express their opinions in public forums for fear of victimization by the insurance companies and their hospital administration. It is important that physicians and nurses are able to fearlessly and frankly respond to the news articles related to healthcare so as to clear the current misconceptions and misinformation about the state our healthcare system. To enable them to do so, we have designed this platform where members can import the new-articles published in lay media and start a discussion about its merits and limitations. With protection of their real-life identity and easy to use interface, physicians and other healthcare providers will be able to critique the article meaningfully and without the need to be politically correct. |
