There is plenty of published data about the bias in "research papers" based on drug company funded trials in favor of the company's products. A systematic bias like this would be a disqualifying criteria for any research paper submitted to any high quality journal, much less the prestigious ones such as NEJM, JAMA and Annals of Internal Medicine. Even though research from individual research group(s) is rarely published in these leading journals if a sytematic bias is discernible. However, on a regular basis, clinical trials conducted or funded by drug companies regularly are published in these journals. The financial implications and impact of these trials which have been shown to routinely "overinterpret" the benefit of a drug treatment is huge to the society and individuals. I would think that publishing clinical trials conducted by drug companies in our prestigious journals should be stopped immediately as it is inimical to the larger interests of the society and only shows that money can buy anything- even a place in NEJM

As long as the journal editorial committee makes sure that they identify and address the bias in any publication, I think it is OK to let them publish in good journals. I think several landmark studies have been sponsored by drug companies.

The drug companies have destroyed medicine. It is difficult to trust any drug company funded research. In oncology, it is so bad, most people can't even imagine how bad it is. I think drug companies are the worst thing to happen to our healthcare. Behind a noble façade of developing new drugs to save mankind, the drug companies have done things that even Satan would be ashamed to admit

Interesting. How are they doing it? Aren't they the reason we have so many new "miracle" drugs now??

I would think not. Someone like me starts thinking that if it is published in a leading medical journal, it must be true and completely free of bias. Looks like that is not always the case. Sad!
