Why shouldn't healthcare administrators be required to have a 'medical' license?

Lately, the healthcare administrators have acquired all the power in healthcare, they control the resources, they tell the physicians how to provide patient care and the hospital staff nowadays listens only to the administrators (and not the physicians). Yet, if there are any mishaps or adverse outcomes, physicians are the ones left defending themselves even for issues which are now outside their control. The administrators are astonishingly fast in dissociating themselves from any problems and since they control the hospital staff, will coordinate to throw the physicians under the bus.

I have been thinking about the rationale for having only the physicians get and maintain a medical license even when they are becoming increasingly powerless in healthcare delivery, but not holding the healthcare administrators to the same standard, especially when they increasingly control the resources, dictate healthcare delivery and have hire and fire authority over the hospital staff. Shouldn't the hospital administrators (at least the CEO of the hospital) be held accountable and culpable for quality of care and mishaps that happen in that hospital. It is no different from what happens in other industries where the CEO is held accountable for quality issues and problems.

Most of the administrators have part-time MBA degrees or MBA from some bottom rung colleges and they would have never qualified to get admission in any medical school. Now they think they know how to practice medicine better than the physicians. A friend of mine once quipped - "it is the revenge of the C-graders over the A-graders". I could not agree more

Looks like there should be an accountability mechanism for the hospital-administrators too. I did not realize they are so powerful.

I think not only the CEO, but all administrators who have authority to dictate to doctors how they should practice, should be made to have a license.

I am a CRNA for about 30 years and have seen the effect of interference of administrators in healthcare first hand. I used to to hate the doctors as they had so much power and they were so arrogant. Now that the doctors don't have the power which now is in the hands of the administrators, the situations is far worse now. Commonsense does not matter anymore. The administrators constantly keep changing the way we do things and that too without any reason. Therefore, things that we used to as a reflex don't apply anymore. The efficiency of care decreases ...

Brenda, I am glad you realize that physicians with power are better than administrators with that power :-) (just kidding)

That would solve half of our problems in one shot. I have tough time dealing with unsolicited advice from administrators about how to run my practice.

I totally agree. With the level of interference by the administrators, it is high time they are help responsible for the results of their actions and decisions.

Great idea :-) It is crazy now. After 20 years in clinical practice, I am told by a "Director" (administrator, 3 years out of nursing school) how to practice medicine. Let her (and other administrators) be accountable for what she recommends and i am sure she will get off her high horse and listen and learn before opening her trap.
